The Neurology Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking an hourly Medical Assistant II to perform technical, patient care, and related clerical functions by coordinating all elements of the patient visit. This position works under direct supervision of LIP (licensed independent practitioner), RN (registered nurse), NM/ANM (nurse manager/assistant nurse manager), or other designee.

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic; interacting with patients, families, nursing staff, and LIPs to the satisfaction of all parties involved
  • Assisting in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, according to patient condition and age, including but not limited to: patient history and screenings, vital signs, medication history, allergies, and immunizations
  • Providing information to patients using preprinted and preapproved documents
  • Collecting specimens for routine and specialized testing, such as urinalysis and venipuncture, using proper collection techniques and special processes as defined by specific specimen collection requirements
  • Performing routine tests and procedures, including POC tests, under the direction of the LIP or per protocol
  • Administering routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications and vaccinations within the scope of practice and per established protocols. Medication can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.
  • Identifying medication renewal needs during the outpatient visit and communicating to the LIP
  • Coordinating prescription renewal process in conjunction with the LIP post outpatient visit
  • Identifying vaccination needs for specific patient populations and administering per protocol
  • Documenting care given and patient history in electronic medical record including clinic forms
  • Managing internal and external medical records to ensure that  accurate and complete data is available for the patient appointments.  Medical records include but are not limited to the following: radiology film, media on-line, and paper medical record documents.  This is managed by: loading, scanning, requesting and compiling
  • Assisting in obtaining pre-authorizations and prior authorizations
  • Performing check in functions
  • Performing cash collection for co-payments and cash box reconciliation
  • Distributing parking stickers per policy
  • Receiving incoming calls and routing to appropriate nurse/provider/service
  • Making outgoing and reminder calls to patients
  • Scheduling appointments as needed
  • Coordinating patient care with other departments
  • Assisting with preparation for upcoming clinics
  • Completing on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered
  • Attending and participating in staff meetings
  • Treating matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements
  • Demonstrating consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers at all times
  • Reporting unusual incidents, complaints or concerns to LIP, nurse manager or designee as appropriate.  Filing PSN reports to record unusual events
  • Transporting patients safely with appropriate hand-off communication
  • Utilizing procedures, skills and techniques to prevent cross-contamination and transmission of infection
  • Anticipating, planning, and responding to the needs of the healthcare team
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families and team members to enhance the operation of the clinic
  • Assisting staff during emergencies within the scope of capabilities and follows standard precautions
  • Maintaining required skills in CPR and emergency care through participation in review sessions
  • Completing assignments, seeking assistance when necessary, and assuming responsibility for special duties or tasks assigned
  • Altering work schedule to meet clinic/patient needs
  • Assuming responsibility for neatness and cleanliness of clinic
  • Cleaning and returning equipment to the proper location. Checking to ensure equipment is maintained by Bioengineering according to expiration date on equipment
  • Obtaining and assembling supplies and equipment for procedures as directed
  • Transporting specimens and supplies
  • Performing other projects or tasks as assigned
  • Incorporating the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations
  • Adhering to UIHC policies regarding personal conduct, including: following established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality
  • Assisting with maintaining unit/clinic to accreditation standards

 

Schedule: Hours worked will typically be between 7:00am-5:30pm/clinic close, Monday-Friday. No weekends or holidays. May be part of the late rotation. Specific schedule to be determined with supervisor upon hire.

Required Qualifications

One of the following:

  • Certification or registration as a Medical Assistant; (or)
  • Completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant program; (or)
  • Completion of a healthcare profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program, including but not limited to: pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology, and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in a healthcare environment with direct patient care
  • Experience with prior authorizations
  • Ability to communicate effectively with hospital staff
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Customer service experience
  • Previous healthcare support experience
  • Demonstrated competency in medical terminology
  • Demonstrated computer skills and ability to navigate the EMR

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any conviction history and will be subject to a criminal background check and credential/education verification. Up to five (5) professional reference may be requested at a later step in the recruitment process.
