How to Apply
Employment Services handles the advertising, application, referral and appointment processes for the Iowa Board of Regents Merit position vacancies at The University of Iowa.
Current Merit University of Iowa Employees
- To Apply as a Contract Transfer
- To Apply as Lateral Transfer, Voluntary Demotion, Reinstatement and Service Area Promotion
Individuals interested in clerical, service, or technical jobs need to:
- Create a Username and Password by choosing "Register" on the Jobs@UIOWA homepage.
- Once registered, select "Complete the Merit Application Setup" in "My Merit Jobs".
- Complete the "Application To Do List" to complete the application process. Please call an Employment Representative at 319-335-2656 between 8 AM - 5PM, Monday-Friday,for questions about the application process.
- You will be notified via email, if supplied, when the application has been approved. This process will take up to 2 business days. If an email address was not supplied, then you may call the office to see if the application has been approved.
- Submit your name for specific Merit openings by logging into the Jobs@UIOWA website. Choose "My Merit Jobs" and select the "Quick Apply to Merit Jobs" link.
- Check the current job vacancies every 1-2 days for openings not already on your "Quick Apply to Merit Jobs" eligibility list.
- If you feel you meet the Merit classification minimum requirements and want to add classifications, call the Employment Services office and ask to speak to an Employment Representative.
- Applicants have until 4:59 PM on the advertising end date to apply for a specific Merit position.

Applications
The Merit Employment Application and optional Affirmative Action Information are to be filled out on line. Applicants must go to the Merit section of the website, select "Apply Now" under the process tab. The "My Merit Jobs" tab will open ( you will be asked to login/register if you have not already done so). To begin your Merit employment application, select "Complete the Merit Application Setup" and follow the online instructions to complete the application checklist.
The Employment Services office has ten computers for completing the online application and some assistance is available. It is recommended you bring someone along to assist you if you are not comfortable using a computer.
Merit applications should be filled out carefully and completely. Resumes are not accepted for Merit positions.
New Applicant Orientation
The new Merit Applicant Orientation(pdf) is available online. The presentation explains how to keep track of Regents Merit openings and gives information on Merit application and referral procedures.
If you have further questions about the electronic Merit application process, contact the Employment Services office between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Friday. You may either:
- Call 319-335-2656, or 1-800-272-6400 from within the state of Iowa and Illinois area code 309 only
- Come into the Employment Services office located in the University Services Building, 1 W Prentiss St, Iowa City, IA 52242 and ask to speak to an Employment Representative
10 computers are available for use in the Employment Services office if further assistance completing the electronic Merit application is needed.
The Job Line
Keep track of available Merit positions by checking the Job Line every 1-2 days. By continuously checking, you will find out about jobs shortly after they begin their 5 day advertising, giving you time to complete any additional application steps if some are necessary.
Merit positions are advertised for a minimum of five working days. Merit job openings are updated daily. Current listings are available by selecting the "View Current Listings" link in the Merit section of JOBS@UIOWA, or in the Employment Services office at 102 University Services Building during office hours.
To apply for merit positions:
- Login to the Jobs@UIOWA website every 1- 2 days and go to the "Quick Apply to Merit Jobs" section under "My Merit Jobs".
- In order to apply for a Merit position currently advertising, an applicant must be prequalified and meet all of the special qualifications listed.
- If you feel you meet the classification minimum requirements for a Merit job on the Job Line that is not on your "Quick Apply to Merit Jobs" list, then please call the Employment Services office at 319-335-2656 and ask to speak to an Employment Representative.
